Different Schools, Same Welcome

We’ve officially finished our first full week of Consent Cafés, and it’s hard to believe how much we’ve done already. One thing I’ve realized is that no two groups are the same. Even though we’ve been facilitating the same conversations, every school has been completely different, and it’s taught me that you really can’t go into a group expecting one approach to work for everyone.

The differences between the schools is something I didn’t expect. The schools had different ages and demographics. I have learned something new at every school we have gone to. One thing I learned is that if your group of male students asks if you’re married, you should say yes, or you may get more marriage proposals then you’d like. I have also learned to adapt quickly and be able to change things as needed.

Even though every school has been different, one thing has stayed the same, the incredible welcome we’ve received everywhere we’ve gone. Every school has made us feel genuinely valued, whether it was through welcoming ceremonies, kind words, or simple acts of hospitality. I honestly continue to be blown away by how generous and welcoming everyone has been. It’s made me realize just how powerful kindness and connection can be.

Looking back on this first week, I think I’ve learned to trust myself more. I’m becoming more comfortable adapting in the moment instead of worrying about everything going exactly as planned. This week has reinforced that relationships come first. Every group requires something a little different, and part of being an effective facilitator is being flexible, patient, and willing to meet people where they are instead of expecting them to meet you where you are. The friendships and bonds we are building within our team are also so important!

Frecko Update: As of August 7, Frecko is still hanging around. He enjoys chilling by the window or in the bathroom! I was very excited and able to get a tattoo of a gecko this week so Frecko will always be with me 🙂
