Even though we’ve only been here a short time, I already feel like I’ve learned a lot about myself. One of the biggest things I’m proud of is that I actually made it here on my own. Before leaving, I was so nervous about traveling internationally by myself, and it honestly felt like the hardest part of the whole trip. Looking back now, I’m really glad I pushed through those fears. It reminded me that I’m capable of doing hard things, even when they feel overwhelming. I already feel more confident in myself because of it, and it’s a good reminder that growth usually comes from stepping outside of my comfort zone.
One of the moments that has stayed with me the most so far was the welcome we received at GNM Nursing School. I knew everyone would be kind, but I wasn’t expecting such an incredible welcome. It was honestly overwhelming in the best way. The students and staff were so welcoming, excited, and genuinely happy that we were there. It made me feel so appreciated, even though we had just arrived. It was such a powerful reminder of how meaningful hospitality and human connection can be. That experience immediately made me feel more comfortable and excited for everything that’s still to come.
I’ve already been reminded of how important relationships are. Before any teaching or learning happened, the focus was on making us feel welcome and building a connection. That really stood out to me because it reflects something we talk about so often in social work: people are more open when they feel seen, respected, and valued. Experiencing that instead of just learning about it in a classroom made the idea feel much more real.
This experience has also reminded me to stay open-minded. Everything here is different from what I’m used to, and instead of comparing it to home, I’m trying to approach each experience with curiosity. I know I’m here to learn just as much as I am to contribute.
I also have a little friend rooming with me. On my first night in the hotel, I found a little gecko in my room who has stayed around so far. I have named him Frecko!
