One of the biggest things that has stood out to me from this experience is how our team came together when one of our team members had a medical emergency. It was obviously a scary situation, especially being so far away from home, but I am really proud of how everyone responded. We all cared about the same thing, which was making sure our team member was okay and had the support they needed.
The medical emergency meant that some of our plans had to change pretty quickly. Everyone just went along with those changes and stepped up wherever they were needed. There wasn’t complaining about missing something or having to change what we were doing. Everyone understood that our team member came first. I think that really showed me the kind of group we had become throughout this trip. We weren’t just a group of students who happened to travel to India together anymore. We genuinely cared about each other and wanted to make sure everyone was okay.
Something else that really stood out to me was that we didn’t only focus on the person experiencing the emergency. We were also checking in with each other and making sure the rest of the team was doing okay. It was a stressful and emotional situation for everyone in different ways, and I think we did a really good job of recognizing that. Some people stepped up in practical ways, while others were there emotionally, and everyone contributed in their own way.
I think I learned that I really value being part of a team like that. I also learned that I can be flexible when things don’t go according to plan. This entire trip has pushed me outside of my comfort zone, and this was another reminder that I can handle unexpected situations without everything falling apart. I don’t always need to know exactly what’s going to happen next. Sometimes I just need to focus on what I can do in that moment and trust the people around me.
Looking back, I think this will be one of the moments from the trip that sticks with me. Obviously, I wish the situation hadn’t happened, but I am incredibly proud of the way our team handled it. It showed me how close we have become and how much we can rely on each other. When something difficult happened, everyone stepped up, changed plans without hesitation, and made sure nobody had to go through it alone. To me, that says a lot about the team we’ve become.
